Who is the Webmaster?
Leon le Roux was born in Durban on 31 December 1953. He was called up to do National Service at 5SAI, Ladysmith, KZN. He entered the gates on the back of a Bedford on 5 September 1972. After Bascis, the Commanding Officer Cmdt George Kruys (RIP) instructed everyone from A Company to volunteer to attend JL’s. Off we went to the Army Gymnasium in Heidelberg near Johannesburg. Leon completed the course in February 1973 as a Platoon Sergeant with the rank of Corporal. He was deployed to Danie Theron Krygskool in Kimberley.
Thereafter several short term military service periods followed of which three were in the Operational Area of South West Africa.
- 1976 – Ombalantu
- 1977 – Elundu (near Eenhana)
- 1979 – Ruacana Airfield.
Leon retired in 2004 and thereafter worked as a freelance contract worker for various companies. During a period of unemployment and boredom he taught himself to build websites on the Joomla open source platform. On Facebook he joined a few Veteran pages. He started a Veterans website, mainly to store stories and pictures of the old Army days. Sometime during 2014 he noticed a Facebook advert of a Skouerskuur in Pretoria. He was introduced to the SA Infantry Association and decided to expand the website and provide a platform for the SAIA to promote their cause.
He called time on the work life during 2017.
It is now five years later and after serving on the NEC for most of the time he has decided to move on from the formal SAIA activities. Still a member he is now focusing on maintaining the website for the good of all Veterans.
